The legendary host of the quiz show Jeopardy, Alex Trebek, has sadly passed away at the age of 80 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Trebek, who was synonymous with the show, had been its face since 1984. On November 8, 2020, Jeopardy! announced the news that he had peacefully departed at home, surrounded by his family and friends. “Jeopardy! is deeply saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by loved ones. Thank you, Alex,” the show conveyed through a heartfelt statement on Facebook.
Trebek publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis during a broadcast in March 2019, stating, “Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week, I was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Generally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m determined to fight, and I plan to keep working. With the love and support of my family and friends, along with your prayers, I hope to defy the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”
True to his word, Trebek continued to host Jeopardy! despite his ongoing treatment. Earlier this year, he announced his intention to retire, though he didn’t specify when that would take place. The pandemic, however, led to a halt in production in March, prompting Trebek to take a necessary break. He returned to hosting duties in October, with reports indicating that the final episodes featuring him would air through Christmas.
Over the summer, Trebek reassured his fans that he was “doing well” and expressed anticipation for the release of his memoir, The Answer Is …: Reflections on My Life, which is now available. He revealed to The New York Times that he had come to terms with his situation, stating, “Yesterday morning my wife asked me how I was feeling, and I said, ‘I feel like I want to die.’ It was that severe. There comes a time when you must decide whether to continue with such a low quality of life, or to gracefully transition into the next level. It doesn’t trouble me in the least.”
Trebek leaves behind his wife, Jean Currivan, and his two children, Matthew and Emily. Rest in peace to an absolute icon.
