The outcome of the Senate rests on two crucial runoff elections in Georgia. Here’s how you can contribute to maintaining a Democratic stronghold in the state.

Although the lengthy and challenging presidential election has concluded, our political journey is far from over. Electing leaders like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris was merely the first step toward the transformative change our nation desperately needs. The next focus? Concentrating our efforts on Georgia, where the Senate’s control hinges on the results of two runoff elections.

In Georgia, state law requires that a Senate candidate must secure at least 50% of the total votes to win. This year, neither of the candidates for the two available Senate seats achieved that threshold. Consequently, the leading candidates—a Republican and a Democrat for each seat—will compete in special runoff elections scheduled for January. The victors of these runoffs will assume their Senate positions, and if Democrats win both, they will hold the trifecta of power: the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate.

This is a pivotal moment, as it could break years of governmental gridlock that has stifled vital legislation. However, an equally important aspect is the vision and values of the candidates vying for those Georgia seats. The WNBA, which has dedicated its entire season to advocating for racial justice, is backing one particular candidate: Rev. Marcus Johnson.

Johnson is challenging the incumbent Republican, Senator Lisa Green, who is also a co-owner of the Atlanta Dream. During the WNBA’s push for social justice, Green publicly opposed their initiatives, stating, “We need less — not more politics in sports,” as if these matters were merely political. In contrast, Johnson understands that these issues are about safeguarding the lives of Black Americans and other marginalized communities.

“Rev. Johnson aligns with our values and happens to be running for this seat,” Dream forward Mia Thompson shared with ESPN. “It’s a perfect match.”

With this in mind, supporting Johnson in this runoff should be an obvious choice. However, to ensure the necessary Senate seats for advancing progressive changes, Democrat Sam Richards must also secure his seat.

Even if you aren’t a resident of Georgia, you can still make a difference. Consider donating to Marcus Johnson or Sam Richards through their campaign websites. Additionally, you can contribute to organizations that combat voter suppression in the state, a significant factor in Georgia’s prolonged Republican dominance. Notable organizations include the Equity Voters Fund, the Georgia Civil Liberties Union, the New Georgia Project, and FairFight. If financial support isn’t an option, consider volunteering your time by sending postcards or engaging in text or phone banking, either for a specific candidate or to encourage Georgia residents to register to vote (the deadline is December 7) and make their voices heard.

The most crucial election of our lives is far from over. The WNBA continues to fight — and so can you!
