A woman has filed a sexual assault lawsuit against a former officer involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, alleging a pattern of predatory behavior. Brett Hankison, who was dismissed from the Louisville police department following Taylor’s death, is now facing serious allegations months after a woman publicly accused him of rape.

The Allegations

In June, Margo Fields shared her experience on social media, recounting an incident from 2018 when, at 22 years old, she accepted a ride home from Hankison, who was 42 and working security at a local bar. Feeling secure with him being a police officer, she agreed to his offer. However, upon arriving at her home, Hankison allegedly entered uninvited and assaulted her while she was unconscious in her bedroom. The lawsuit states, “He stripped off his clothes and willfully, intentionally, painfully and violently sexually assaulted Margo.” According to Fields, she woke up to find him on top of her and screamed for him to leave. The traumatic encounter left her emotionally and physically scarred, with her sheets stained with blood.

Fear of Retaliation

Fields was hesitant to come forward initially, fearing retaliation and doubting that anyone would believe her due to Hankison’s status as a police officer. “I never reported him out of fear of retaliation,” she explained in her post. “Who do you call when the person who assaulted you is a police officer? I knew it wouldn’t be me.”

Additional Allegations

Unfortunately, Fields is not alone in her allegations against Hankison. Another woman, Sarah Greene, shared her own encounter on social media, claiming Hankison made unwanted advances while giving her a ride home. After escaping from his vehicle, Greene reported the incident to authorities, but no action was taken.

Fields’s lawsuit includes accounts from eight other women who allege similar misconduct by Hankison, primarily involving him offering rides home from the same bar. Despite numerous claims of sexual misconduct, Hankison faced no disciplinary actions from the Louisville Metro Police Department. The lawsuit also notes an investigation by the department’s Public Integrity Unit regarding Hankison’s alleged attempts to solicit sexual favors from a woman in exchange for not pressing charges against her.

Current Legal Status

Currently, Hankison is awaiting trial on charges of “wanton endangerment in the first degree” related to the Taylor case, which involves jeopardizing the safety of her neighbors. None of the officers involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor have been charged with her death.
