Just a week before I took this picture, I found myself asking a close friend why there are so many women crying in blog posts across the Internet. I genuinely wondered why someone would capture a selfie in such a vulnerable state and share it publicly. Was it a call for attention? Did they have nothing better to do while experiencing pain than to turn their camera to portrait mode? Now, I get it.
There’s no good visual to convey difficult news except for an honest one.
This image captures me just moments after receiving the news that I would need a hysterectomy. If there had been a camera near me, it could have shown me the day my partner’s heart stopped, or when my children were diagnosed with autism, or when I faced abuse and miscarriage, among many other trials.
I may feel embarrassed about my appearance in this moment, but I’m not ashamed of my emotions. It’s often simpler to post the “happy” sides of our lives rather than the struggles we endure. In a world of quick scrolls, people often squirm at the sight of others’ pain, prompting them to reflect on their own.
Yet, silence has never served me well.
So here’s a snapshot of me at my most vulnerable, yet arguably my most genuine. It’s dedicated to every woman who has shed tears over betrayal, stillbirth, sexual violence, or caring for children with special needs. I feel heartbroken and sad, but I find comfort in knowing I am not alone.
We have all been there—feeling hurt and helpless. This is a universal experience because navigating a broken world inevitably leaves us feeling broken. Life encompasses both beauty and suffering.
I believe our survival hinges on our willingness to reveal our true selves (and our selfies) to one another.
We are women united by our experiences, not just as mothers but as partners, daughters, sisters, and friends. We need a space to discuss more than just parenting.
