In a surprising move, YouTube has chosen not to release its traditional “Rewind” video for the first time since 2010, citing the overwhelming negativity of 2020. This annual recap typically showcases the year’s most significant videos and cultural moments in a vibrant, yearbook-style format. However, the platform has deemed this year too difficult to celebrate, labeling it a “hard year,” which feels like an understatement.

“Since 2010, we’ve concluded the year with Rewind, celebrating the creators, videos, and trends that made an impact. Whether you loved it or only have memories of 2018, Rewind was intended to honor you,” YouTube explained in a statement. “But 2020 has been different, and it doesn’t feel appropriate to carry on as if it wasn’t. Thus, we will be taking a break from Rewind this year.”

In 2019, the Rewind video featured a compilation of the most liked clips on the platform, encompassing everything from K-pop to slime-making and Ariana Grande’s music. It was a joyful representation of what captivated audiences throughout the year. In contrast, the 2018 edition, although criticized by many, highlighted trending topics like ASMR and Fortnite in a somewhat cheesy but earnest manner. Sadly, 2020’s events—ranging from a global pandemic to social justice issues and political turmoil—make for a year that many would prefer to forget.

“We understand that much of the positivity that emerged in 2020 was due to all of you,” YouTube said, addressing their creators directly. “You’ve discovered ways to uplift others, provide support, and bring laughter. You truly made a challenging year better.”

Google, YouTube’s parent company, also usually shares a “Year In Search” video, but this year, the thought of what people were searching for is daunting. Imagine the search queries: “What if Trump doesn’t concede?” “Does bleach cure COVID-19?” It might be better to leave this year behind without delving into those statistics. It will be interesting to see if Google decides to skip its retrospective as well. With only 49 days left in 2020, it’s clear that the challenges we face won’t simply vanish.

In summary, YouTube has decided to forgo its yearly Rewind video due to the overwhelming negativity of 2020.
