We find ourselves at a difficult juncture once more; if Lily requires inpatient care, she will have to be admitted alone. Most likely, she will be airlifted to a hospital we have never been to, as our local hospital and many others in our state are overwhelmed — and she would be there without either of her parents to advocate for her extensive medical needs.
Seeing so many posts from individuals encouraging “living life” and “not living in fear” is disheartening and painful. You are opting to endanger the lives of vulnerable people like Lily, as well as your own family members, all to demonstrate your own strength, while our child struggles to access basic healthcare.
I still often hear that the vulnerable should simply stay home, and that Lily’s health is solely our responsibility. However, we must go to the pharmacy for her medications and essential supplies. Although we have groceries delivered, the suggestion to “just stay home” isn’t a feasible option for us. Lily requires access to healthcare services that go beyond COVID treatment; she has a tracheostomy, compromised lungs, and various ongoing needs due to her premature birth. With the hospital system under duress, there is a heightened risk of delayed responses to any medical emergencies, regardless of whether they are pandemic-related.
As you make your holiday arrangements, I implore you to think about individuals in your community, like Lily, who depend on hospital resources — beds, ventilators, suction equipment, and most importantly, the already overworked healthcare professionals. This is still a crucial time to prioritize the collective well-being over personal liberties. I don’t need your thoughts or prayers; I need you to skip Thanksgiving and stay home.
Please don’t express concern for my child or others like her and then continue living as though the pandemic isn’t a reality.
