A Canadian advertising agency has crafted the PSA we all needed to bid farewell to 2020 in a fitting manner. Let’s face it: this year has been, to put it mildly, a complete disaster—a chaotic mix of suffering, uncertainty, illness, and even murder hornets. Yes, murder hornets. How can we possibly encapsulate all the apocalyptic events that have unfolded this year? Fortunately, more imaginative individuals have been working on just that. Enter a Toronto-based agency with a PSA designed to give 2020 the send-off it truly deserves.
In a wonderfully cathartic 90-second video, numerous people express a universal sentiment: Goodbye, 2020, and all the mess you’ve brought along. This is quite possibly the only “year in review” that makes any sense after such a dreadful 12 months.
“We begin with a resounding, ‘Goodbye, Covid-19!’” declares a healthcare worker standing outside a hospital.
“Thanks for taking my job,” a man states while seated outside his own home.
“Thanks for closing his school,” a mother adds, standing at the entrance of her son’s room. “Yeah, goodbye!” he agrees from his bed, staring at his laptop. Parents and kids navigating virtual schooling will resonate with that.
The PSA continues with a couple lamenting their ruined wedding plans, a man in the bathroom addressing toilet paper hoarders (remember those?), and individuals delivering their own resounding “goodbyes” to figures like Mitch McConnell, Derek Chauvin, and anyone who uttered “all lives matter” this year.
“All lives will truly matter when black lives matter,” a woman wisely points out.
Overall, the PSA manages to throw 31 well-deserved goodbyes at 2020 (possibly 32, as the last one is somewhat muffled). The video also features plenty of birds directed at this terrible year. While it’s impossible to feature all 7 billion people on the planet in a single short ad, I feel this video captures my sentiments perfectly, and I’m sure many others will feel the same way.
What makes this PSA even more impactful is that it’s not just a “goodbye” to 2020 for the sake of it—there’s a meaningful cause behind it.
“This year, everyone could use a little extra support,” the PSA concludes, encouraging viewers to text a middle finger emoji to a number to donate to the Mental Health Coalition in the U.S. or the Black Health Alliance in Canada. Both organizations provide mental health support, particularly for vulnerable populations during this challenging year. That’s something we can all rally around.
