A Long-Overdue Thank You to My Mom This Christmas

Dear Mom,

I owe you an apology for not expressing my gratitude for all the Christmases you created when I was too young to understand the effort involved in being a mom during the holidays. You poured your time, energy, and patience into making the season magical—not for your own sake, but for us. I can only imagine that your joy came from seeing our excitement and happiness, the twinkle in our eyes, and the warmth of family moments shared together.

Though money was often tight, you always gave so much of yourself to ensure Christmas felt special. I didn’t grasp the depth of your love back then, but I certainly do now.

As I pull out boxes filled with ornaments, decorations, and strings of lights, I find myself unpacking not just items, but cherished memories from my childhood while creating new ones with my own kids. I guide them as they hang ornaments, follow recipes, and learn the value of giving over receiving.

While I vacuum up pine needles and set up the nativity scene, I can’t help but reflect on all the hard work you put into our celebrations. I manage the shopping, wrapping, and hiding of gifts, all while crafting grocery lists and meal plans, creating a feast of festive treats.

As the kids’ Christmas lists seem to grow endlessly, I try my best to help them understand the true meaning of this special time. I run errands, juggle details, and answer a flood of questions like “Is it Christmas yet?” and “Can we open just one present early?”

In doing all these things, I recognize that I’m following in your footsteps—though I may not always approach it with the same joy you exuded. I want you to know that I truly appreciate everything you did. It mattered more than words can convey.

Thank you, Mom, for all the wonderful Christmases you gave me. As I share this holiday spirit with my own kids, I will carry your love and magic with me forever.
