Growing up in a small town in the Northeast during the ‘80s meant winter afternoons were often filled with quiet, cozy moments. As the sun dipped and painted the sky in shades of purple, one of my favorite activities was making a steaming cup of hot cocoa. With limited resources, those afternoons were special, especially when I could sneak in a few extra spoonfuls of sugar. (Am I alone in being able to down a dry spoonful of Nestle Quik without a single complaint?)
I would grab the tin of Nestle Quik, scoop out a generous amount of cocoa, and drop it into my mug of microwaved milk. We never had those individual hot cocoa packets, and frankly, they never had enough cocoa for my taste. I found it fascinating that by sticking my spoon into the milk without stirring, I could watch the top layer of cocoa peel off, revealing dry powder beneath. It was hours of entertainment for a kid like me, and when I shared this “magic” with my siblings, they thought I was quite the wizard.
So, when my kids sent me a TikTok video showcasing a chocolate bomb bursting in hot milk to reveal cocoa powder, marshmallows, and other delightful treats, it transported me straight back to my childhood kitchen. How could something so mesmerizing exist? I must have replayed that video a dozen times before I could even think of a question.
Where do you find these? Can I make them at home? Why am I just hearing about this now?
A little research revealed that these delightful treats can easily be made at home with your family. Although we haven’t attempted it yet, I’ve already pinned a bunch of how-to videos and am eagerly awaiting my molds to arrive. It’s just the kind of adventure we need during this holiday season, especially while spending time with the kids at home during a pandemic. We’ve already baked countless loaves of bread and tried quirky TikTok recipes, like pickles rolled in hot Cheetos and bacon S’mores. Hot cocoa bombs seem like a fun, accessible challenge—one that I wouldn’t need to mentally prepare my taste buds for.
Even if hot cocoa isn’t your thing (what happened to you?), you can still find joy in the process of making something incredibly cool. I could honestly watch those bombs explode all day long. After all, we’ve got nowhere special to be these days.
To create your own hot cocoa bombs, all you need are some molds, good melting chocolate, a microwave or double boiler, hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, and any other fillings you desire (I might even add chocolate chips because why not?). If DIY isn’t in the cards for you, you can always order some and have them delivered right to your door.
Honestly, I’m tempted to do both. I have this idealistic vision of crafting projects with my kids, but the reality often involves chaos, exhaustion, and a bit of arguing. Still, I remain hopeful that making chocolate bombs will be worth whatever mess ensues.
Let the chocolate melting (and drinking) festivities begin! Or, if you’re like me, you could always try this quick hack: hollow out some Lindt chocolate balls and fill them with Swiss Miss hot cocoa mix. I had to at least give it a shot—purely for research purposes.
