A video shared by educator Lily Martinez, showcasing her first-grade students embracing each other, captured the hearts of many when it went viral in 2018. Tragically, as the new year began, the El Paso community received the heartbreaking news of Martinez’s passing after she fought COVID-19 for two months. The beloved teacher, known for her warm “good morning or goodbye” hugs, handshakes, and high-fives, had been hospitalized for nine weeks before her death at the age of 35.
“She always made an effort to share kindness, whether it was with a message or a note or just reaching out to her colleagues,” said Principal Taylor Ramirez, who spoke to ABC News about Martinez’s loving nature. Last year, when the school shifted to remote learning, Martinez took the initiative to create care packages filled with masks, pencils, and candy, delivering them to students at the start of the school year.
“She embodied kindness,” Ramirez added. “That’s who she was.” The principal fondly recalled how Martinez was surprised by the impact of her video, which has since amassed over 22 million views. “That small action touched so many lives,” she noted, attributing the loving atmosphere in Martinez’s classroom to her nurturing spirit.
Nick Adkins, co-founder of PinkSocks Life, a foundation dedicated to promoting compassion, recognized Martinez’s video and praised her for “living the ethos of gifting every day.” The organization provided pink socks for all 32 of her students, further supporting their bond. Martinez also played a significant role in helping her school community after the tragic shooting at a Walmart in El Paso in August 2019, organizing efforts to provide pink socks for every student and staff member.
Upon hearing of Martinez’s passing, the school informed families of her students, including those from previous years. Ramirez mentioned that they are collecting photos and letters from students to present to her family. Once in-person classes resume, the school plans to create a “kindness corner” in her honor, serving as a lasting tribute to her compassionate legacy.
