This past year felt like a relentless barrage of challenges; just when we thought we could brace ourselves for one hit, we were met with another unexpected blow. Hindsight may be said to be 20/20, yet reflecting on 2020 reveals a murky landscape, with the undeniable truth that our society has much work to do in terms of social and emotional understanding. However, the year provided ample opportunities to learn and stay informed about significant issues. From the pandemic to social justice movements and environmental disasters, we found ourselves turning to Google for answers to tough questions. Did we gain insight from these experiences? I took a moment to explore Google’s most searched topics across various categories.
Top Searches
According to Google, the year’s most searched topics included election results, the coronavirus, and the late Kobe Bryant. Other notable mentions were Zoom, Naya Rivera, and Chadwick Boseman, all making the top 10 list. It’s intriguing to see how many people were captivated by celebrity news while also grappling with pressing survival questions.
How to Help…
The pandemic introduced new challenges, but it also underscored existing issues like economic inequality and systemic racism. The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on marginalized communities highlighted their vulnerability. Thankfully, many seemed eager to take action. The most common search was related to how to assist the Australian wildfires, followed by inquiries about supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and pandemic-related aid. Additionally, people sought advice on how to alleviate conditions like acid reflux and panic attacks, which perfectly encapsulates the strangeness of 2020.
How to Donate…
While many were anxiously awaiting their stimulus checks, others were focused on where they could contribute their resources. The top search in this category was related to donating to BLM, followed by inquiries on how to help with the Australian bushfires and blood donation. There was also a notable interest in donating eggs, plasma, and funding for the Georgia Senate runoff.
Beauty How-Tos…
In a year filled with heavy news, it was surprising to see the simplicity of beauty-related searches. Many individuals took matters into their own hands when it came to personal grooming. The top search was how to cut men’s hair at home, followed by how to plop and color hair at home. Interestingly, among these was a search on how to wash your hands—something we should all have mastered by now! Pandemics certainly bring about a questioning of our basic hygiene practices.
How to Make…
This section was particularly fascinating, as many took on DIY projects during lockdown. Searches included how to make hand sanitizer (1), fabric face masks (2), and bread (6). Yet, in a nod to modernity, people were also curious about how to make whipped coffee (3), a Bitmoji classroom (8), and live wallpapers (10). Navigating online teaching while covered in flour? What a unique experience!
Definitions…
Curiosity led many to search for definitions of words they encountered frequently. The most searched term was WAP, followed by entanglement, which seemed fitting for those navigating complex relationships during lockdown. Other notable terms included Juneteenth (6) and BIPOC (7), suggesting a growing interest in education. The term “simp” also made the list at #9—often used to describe a man who goes above and beyond for romantic attention, but it also reflects toxic masculinity that seems increasingly out of place.
As we entered a new year, we remain entrenched in the pandemic. Our searches may still revolve around COVID-19—new strains, vaccines, stimulus checks—but I hope that 2021 brings more diverse topics and insights.
