In a clip filmed by a bystander and shared widely, an officer found himself trapped between the Capitol door and the mob. One individual appears to reach for the officer’s mask as he struggled to free himself. The video captures the officer’s cries for help amidst the chaos, as rioters chanted, “Heave, ho! Heave, ho!” while pushing against the entrance. Eventually, the officer managed to escape but was left bloodied and without his mask. His condition remains uncertain.
The individual who recorded the footage, Alex Grant, spoke with various news outlets about the relentless nature of the confrontation. “There was no reasoning with them,” Grant remarked about the rioters, noting their determination to breach the Capitol regardless of the consequences. He added that they kept rotating in and out, declaring they needed “fresh patriots” to continue the assault.
This incident starkly contrasts the usual rhetoric from far-right extremists who criticize movements like Black Lives Matter for perceived disrespect toward police. Ironically, the same groups that champion phrases such as “Blue Lives Matter” appeared to abandon their support for law enforcement during the insurrection. In a separate but related incident, a rioter was seen just before the tragic shooting of insurrectionist Ashli Babbit, demanding that police support them as they did during BLM protests.
Social media users quickly highlighted this hypocrisy. MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes discussed the hostile atmosphere on Capitol Hill, where some rioters openly expressed intentions to harm political leaders they felt had betrayed them. A disturbing image from the riots even showed a gallows erected outside the Capitol.
The events of that day resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. The FBI is currently soliciting information from the public to help identify those who participated in the violent breach of the Capitol and the surrounding areas in Washington, D.C.
