Yelp Enhances Listings to Reflect Restaurants’ COVID Precautions

As states adjust their indoor dining restrictions, Yelp is making strides to enhance consumer confidence regarding restaurant safety measures during the pandemic. The platform has introduced a feature allowing both patrons and restaurants to share insights about the COVID-19 safety practices in place.

Previously, restaurants could outline their safety protocols, but Yelp now enables customers to provide feedback on whether these measures are being adhered to. “Starting today, Yelp will show if users have noticed the enforcement of social distancing and whether staff are wearing masks,” explained Jamie Thompson, Yelp’s head of community engagement. This initiative is designed to boost consumer trust and encourage support for local eateries.

Information regarding safety practices will be displayed under the “Health & Safety Measures” section of a restaurant’s COVID-19 profile. Users may see notes like “Social distancing may not be enforced” or “staff might not wear masks.” Additionally, Yelp has added options for businesses to showcase new service offerings, such as “heated outdoor seating” and “disposable or contactless menus,” to reflect their adaptability in response to evolving health guidelines.

Yelp is committed to keeping this information updated, ensuring businesses can improve based on community feedback. Reviews can only be submitted by logged-in users based on experiences within the last 28 days, and for chain restaurants, feedback is limited to individual locations. If a restaurant garners an orange question mark indicating a lack of adherence to precautions, Yelp will clarify whether this feedback comes from “most users” or “some users.”

“At this point, the orange question mark is displayed for only a few hundred out of the millions of businesses on Yelp, making it a relatively rare occurrence,” Thompson noted. The company has implemented safeguards to prevent the misuse of this feature.

A report from September revealed that approximately 60% of businesses that shut down during the pandemic may never reopen, with restaurants being hit particularly hard.
