Public Service Announcement: The Pandemic is Still Ongoing – Make Thoughtful Choices

I find myself longing for the lively gatherings of the past, where family and friends would come together for a feast, laughter, and games. Those were the days I truly cherished.

I miss my themed nights with the girls. One memorable occasion was a fun party centered around intimate items, after which I hosted a jewelry party. There was even a time when a group of us rented a local theater for a movie night complete with a buffet.

Recently, while watching a movie, I saw a scene filled with elegantly dressed guests enjoying passed hors d’oeuvres and another where characters sampled treats at a bakery. It made me nostalgic for those moments of carefree sharing of food and the joy of potlucks.

However, as much as I yearn for these experiences, I recognize that nostalgia shouldn’t lead me to make unwise choices. Although many places are reopening—restaurants, shops, and even salons—the reality is that COVID-19 cases and fatalities are at an alarming high in my state. It’s crucial to stay vigilant and prioritize our health.

Instead of dining out, consider supporting local businesses through takeout, curbside pickup, or gift certificates. Like many, I’ve faced challenges during this time, but I’ve seen firsthand the consequences of gatherings. A close friend celebrated with her boyfriend and family, only to find themselves infected with the virus shortly after. This not only ruined her holiday but also put her elderly grandmother at risk.

This is the harsh reality we face, with COVID spreading rapidly and lives at stake. A number of individuals I know chose to keep their holidays small, making sacrifices for the greater good. We all miss our loved ones, especially during special moments, but if we can hold off just a bit longer, we might see a change that allows us to safely enjoy those gatherings once more.

My kids and I once enjoyed our weekly lunch outings, sitting together and sharing quality time. I look forward to those days returning, yet for now, we make do with lunches in the car or special meals at home. Just because something is possible doesn’t mean it’s wise to do it now. Non-essential activities like leisurely shopping or picnics can wait; the health of our community cannot.

A friend in New York City pointed out that the reopening of businesses gives a false sense of security, leading many to believe the danger has passed. But the reality is stark—just check the news to see the daily rise in cases and deaths.

This situation is far from over, and it will continue to be a struggle if we don’t take personal responsibility. While it’s tough, the potential lives saved and the prospect of returning to normalcy make it worthwhile.

Please, let’s make smart choices and stay safe. The day will come when we can celebrate together again, but that time is not now. We must act wisely to ensure a brighter future.
