As we celebrate Inauguration Day, there’s a renewed sense of optimism in the air. Our children are observing this pivotal moment, and after a challenging few years, it’s time for them to partake in the excitement. The Biden Inauguration Team has created numerous opportunities for kids to engage in this historic occasion.
Livestream for Young Americans
The Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC) is offering a unique “curated livestream for young Americans” preceding and during the Inaugural Ceremonies, where President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in. Hosted by Keke Palmer, the livestream will include a special message from Dr. Jill Biden, our new First Lady, alongside insights from historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Erica Armstrong Dunbar.
Highlights for Younger Viewers
A highlight for younger viewers is a segment on presidential pets, produced by Nickelodeon. This will introduce kids to Champ and Major Biden, the new First Dogs, along with other famous canine residents of the White House. Notably, Donald Trump was among the few presidents without a dog during his term.
Engaging Content and Resources
Additionally, the team is sharing excerpts from student voices via PBS NewsHour’s “We the Young People” program, featuring fun trivia, segments from the Library of Congress, and other engaging content. The livestream can be watched at BidenInaugural.org/youth on January 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It will also be available on Nickelodeon, Discovery Education, Amazon Prime Video, and various social media platforms. A Spanish-language broadcast will occur later on Discovery Familia.
Educational Materials
Other educational materials include a downloadable coloring book available at BidenInaugural.org/coloringbook. Discovery has launched “I Do Solemnly Swear,” featuring interviews with inaugural experts and a greeting from First Lady Jill Biden, which you can watch on YouTube anytime. PBS has also put together an educational collection of resources about U.S. presidential inaugurations for students in grades 4-12, accessible via PBS LearningMedia.
