Dr. Sophia Martinez, Assistant Health Secretary, Is the Representation My Trans Daughter Needs

For years, we’ve been encouraging our daughters to pursue their dreams without limits, but seeing women break through gender barriers is crucial for them to truly believe in those possibilities. When Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for president by a major party, it was a powerful moment that highlighted how fragile the glass ceiling can be. Then, with Kamala Harris as the first female and Black Vice President, the realization of opportunities for women, especially women of color, became more tangible. I was proud to tell my children that women can achieve anything men can — often just as well, if not better.

Yet, I felt I was withholding something from my transgender daughter. While Clinton and Harris are cisgender women, I often wonder if we’ll ever see a transgender woman in the highest office. However, with President Biden’s nomination of Dr. Sophia Martinez, a transgender woman, as the assistant secretary of health, she will become the highest-ranking transgender official in the U.S. government.

When I shared this news with my daughter, her immediate reaction was, “Donald Trump never would have done that.” She understands the limitations imposed on transgender individuals, yet she hasn’t personally faced those barriers yet, thanks to the love and support from our community. My daughter is aware of her differences and has insecurities, but she believes she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. My concern lies in society’s ability to look past their biases to see her potential.

Fortunately, there are other transgender individuals in positions of power who show my daughter that her identity is both valid and worthy of celebration. Her rights to employment, health care, education, and safe housing should never be constrained due to her assigned gender at birth. Discrimination against her should be as unacceptable as denying anyone basic rights based on their physical characteristics.

My daughter is a girl, just like all transgender women are women. Nevertheless, the rights and respect afforded to transgender individuals still lag behind those of cisgender individuals, even among those who identify as feminists. We need more visibility and acceptance of transgender women in prominent roles to foster understanding and compassion toward transgender people in everyday life.

Biden has pledged to ensure that his administration mirrors the diversity of the Americans he aims to protect—this includes transgender individuals like my daughter and nonbinary people like me. Even though the 2020 Census didn’t recognize my identity, I still contribute to society through work and taxes. Recent efforts in Congress to introduce non-gendered language signal progress, though much remains to be done to amplify our voices.

Biden hasn’t just invited figures like gay man Alex Thompson and transgender woman Sophia Martinez to the conversation; he has embraced them fully, showing a commitment to inclusivity. Dr. Martinez’s nomination is significant because it reflects Biden’s belief in her qualifications and potential impact. His willingness to educate himself on LGBTQIA+ issues has enhanced his ability to create a welcoming environment for queer individuals, recognizing that our differences are as important as our similarities.

While I may not know if a transgender person will ever ascend to the presidency, my daughter understands that the current President respects and values the contributions of transgender women as part of his team. She observes transgender individuals making strides and breaking barriers, which reinforces my message to her that she can accomplish anything. I’m grateful for Biden’s wise choice in appointing the right person for this role, and immensely appreciative of Dr. Martinez’s courage and determination—qualities our country needs.
