When I first heard Kamala Harris declare, “We did it, Joe,” my heart filled with an overwhelming sense of joy. It was a moment I didn’t realize I needed so desperately. We did it. The “we” resonated deeply with me, representing Black women everywhere. Kamala Devi Harris is the first Black woman to serve as Vice President of the United States and also the first woman of Indian descent to hold this esteemed office. It’s a milestone I wasn’t sure I would witness while still young enough to appreciate its significance. Yet, here we are. This morning, I watched as a Black woman was sworn in by another woman of color, Justice Elena Rodriguez, and the tears flowed freely as she began the oath. We did it.
As a Black woman in America, the weight we carry is not lost on me. From the very beginnings of this nation, we have been undervalued and overworked. Yet, despite the challenges, we continue to rise and pursue excellence. It’s never an easy path, but we understand that when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. So, if that means we must continue to fight against insurmountable odds, that’s precisely what we will do. Kamala Harris embodies years of resilience and tenacity, reminding us of how far we’ve come while signaling that there’s still much work ahead.
Kamala Harris is the realization of dreams held by every Black woman who came before her. From the enslaved women who toiled in fields and cared for the children of their owners, they dreamed of a life filled with purpose. They yearned for a legacy that transcended their immediate circumstances. Black women have marched and raised their voices against injustices, often silenced yet endlessly dreaming of equality. As they claimed their rightful place in society, their aspirations only grew larger. Kamala stands on the shoulders of trailblazers like Mary McLeod Bethune, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm. She is the dream that, for so long, was delayed but is now finally coming to fruition.
I anticipated that witnessing Kamala Harris take the oath of office would be meaningful, but the depth of my emotions took me by surprise. As her hand rested on that Bible, my heart swelled with pride. The tears filled my eyes even before she spoke. I understood the significance of the moment; with her words, she was showcasing the immense potential of Black women. We are so much more than society often perceives us to be.
Black women are the backbone of this nation, and now we have a figure to whom we can proudly point and say, “Look at what we can achieve.” We are not mere stereotypes or invisible figures; we are a powerful force that deserves recognition.
When I see Kamala Harris at the podium, I see my family: my mother, grandmother, aunts, and cousins. In her, I see myself, my sisters, and my friends—all striving for our rightful place in this world. I also see the next generation, the daughters of my friends, and all the young Black girls who are still discovering their purpose but are now aware that there are no limits to what they can achieve. I hope they look at her and think, “Because of her, I can too.”
The best part is that Kamala Harris recognizes the weight of her representation. You can see it in her eyes, the way she expresses, “I see you, Sis. This is for you.” Standing alongside Justice Rodriguez and her husband, I felt the warmth of her love for all the women who paved the way for her—those who support her, cheer her on, and those of us fighting for respect in a society that often overlooks us. She embodies the dreams of all of us, and those dreams no longer have to wait.
We did it.
