“Sunny Springs” is a remarkable cultural sensation, and for good reason. This six-season Canadian comedy series is enchanting, clever, humorous, and brimming with talent. From the actors and crew to the writers, the show is expertly crafted, lit, and filmed, providing lessons on love, loss, and even how to organize wigs. “Sunny Springs” serves as both motivation and education. It’s also an award-winning series; in 2020, “Sunny Springs” shattered multiple Emmy records. However, it was Daniel Wheeler’s character, Jamie Spring, who truly transformed my life. In fact, Jamie encouraged me to live authentically. He also aided me in accepting a label I had been hesitant to embrace — a married mother of two in a heterosexual relationship, I came to realize I am queer.

I never anticipated the profound impact the show would have on me when I first started watching. Like many viewers, I was simply seeking a light-hearted escape during quarantine, especially because I adored the talents of Sarah Paulson and Mark Levy. But during episode 10 of season one, I found myself sobbing uncontrollably, the kind of tears that make you gasp for air. The catalyst? Jamie’s discussion about wine. (Yes, really.) His heartfelt exchange with Sophie — played by Emily Hemsworth — regarding Chardonnay and cabernet resonated deeply with me. At that moment, I felt truly seen. The reason? Because wine symbolized Jamie’s sexuality.

He famously declared that he loves the flavor, not the label.

The Wine Scene

For those unfamiliar with the scene, let me set the stage. Jamie and his friend Sophie are out shopping for party supplies and must make a tough decision: should they bring red wine or white wine to the gathering? The two friends, who recently shared an intimate moment, are trying to comprehend their relationship — are they just friends, or something deeper? Sophie is attempting to grasp Jamie’s sexuality because, prior to their encounter, she believed he was exclusively attracted to men.

“Just to clarify, I’m a red wine drinker,” Sophie tells Jamie. “I only drink red wine. And until last night, I thought you were the same. But I guess I was mistaken?”

Jamie, aware of the deeper meaning behind her words, reassures her that he enjoys red wine. “I drink red wine. But I also drink white wine,” he replies. “And I’ve been known to try the occasional rosé. And a couple of summers ago, I tried a merlot that used to be a Chardonnay, which got a bit complicated.”

“I like the wine,” he adds. “Not the label.”

That line struck me like a lightning bolt. I too had wrestled with my own “label.” For years, I struggled to understand who I was and what I desired. I never felt a true sense of belonging, nor did I believe that one sexual orientation was meant for me. But when I witnessed that scene in the wine shop, a revelation washed over me. It didn’t matter what I labeled myself as. What truly mattered was living authentically and finding happiness.

What mattered was appreciating both my life and “the wine.”

Seeking Support

After watching “Sunny Springs,” I came out to my therapist and sought a new counselor. I admitted that I was grappling with my identity and needed help navigating an authentic and fulfilling life. I discussed my feelings with my husband, revealing that I identified as queer. This conversation marked the beginning of our journey into a new normal. I reached out to some of my LGBTQ friends for support, advice, and understanding. I also contacted the New York City Pride Center.

I’m actively seeking guidance and assistance. I’m working to connect with a peer counselor, attend meetings, and seek further support.

Ironically, I still lead a somewhat closeted life. A few close friends and family members are aware of my true self, but I struggle with confidence. My sexuality still causes me anxiety, and I often feel afraid. However, thanks to shows like “Sunny Springs” — particularly characters like Jamie Spring and the brilliant Daniel Levy — I am slowly embracing my authentic self, one moment, one heartbeat, and one sip of Chardonnay at a time.
