I Wish I Had a Reason to Purchase This Pooping Flamingo

While scrolling through my Facebook feed recently, I came across a video shared by my friend featuring her adorable little one. It immediately drew my attention because it showcased a bright pink stuffed flamingo that seemed to be having a bit of a struggle. Its neck was flailing about in a bizarre manner, making strange sounds. The little one was giggling and wriggling with excitement, eagerly anticipating this flamingo’s quirky performance.

But hold on … was it really performing? No, wait—was that … a toilet? Yes, indeed! This vibrant pink flamingo was perched on a tiny plastic toilet, preparing to relieve itself. Alright, so the flamingo was going to pretend to poop. That’s cute. But WAIT. Was something actually coming out of its rear? As I watched in a mix of fascination and horror, a beige, gooey substance began to ooze from the flamingo’s backside and into the small toilet, which I then realized was clear to showcase the expulsion of this gooey material. The flamingo had done it! “He’s poopin!!” my friend’s little one shouted with glee for the camera. That child was absolutely thrilled.

My kids are now 14 and 11, well past the days of potty training. Without the magic of this incredible pooping flamingo — which I quickly learned is called the “Little Live Gotta Go Flamingo” and was apparently a big hit during Christmas 2020 — I had to use M&Ms to entice my kids to use the toilet. This flamingo that poops is a million times better, and I can’t help but feel envious that today’s parents have this option. I have no doubt that my son, who was difficult to potty train, would have been all in for watching this ridiculous toy make a mess in a tiny plastic toilet. But no, I had to make do with whatever tricks I could come up with. Parents today have it easy with their pooping flamingos! What an incredible time to be alive.

How Did They Come Up with This Idea?

Can you imagine how the creative team at Moose Toys — the makers of Little Live Pets — came up with this concept? I envision a group of professionals gathered around a sleek boardroom table in their fancy Melbourne headquarters, having a serious discussion about which animal would bring the most joy to kids by sitting on a toilet and doing its business.

“How about a koala? They’re cute no matter what.”

“That’s the issue. We need something sillier.”

“Good point. How about a sloth? They’re quite silly!”

“Nah, it would take too long. Kids would get bored.”

The room falls silent as everyone ponders this.

“A turtle?”

“The shell would be a problem.”

“True. Good call.”

“I’ve got it! Let’s go with a flamingo. We can make its neck do strange things while it poops.”

“Perfect! Plus, we won’t need to worry about giving it arms.” The room bursts into applause as someone scribbles notes furiously. High fives all around!

Okay, that’s probably not how it actually happened, but let me dream a little. In a world that often feels like chaos, we all need some joy.

Of course, the Little Live Gotta Go Flamingo isn’t the first pooping toy for kids. Fur Real had a dog and cat that also dropped little turds when walked. “Everyone Poops,” a classic children’s book from 1993, helps normalize the act of going number two. However, the Gotta Go Flamingo is the first I’ve seen that uses a transparent toilet to explicitly showcase the poop being expelled. Kudos to Moose Toys for their trailblazing creativity.

To be clear, I’m all for this quirky little toy. I’m genuinely envious that today’s parents have the opportunity to use this amusing flamingo to ease the potty training process. My kids may be well beyond that stage, but I might just have to get a pooping flamingo for myself because it’s that delightful. Who knows, maybe I’ll place it on display alongside my grandmother’s china.

These days, my social media feed and life in general can feel quite grim. But take heart: we have pooping flamingos! This bizarre, grunting flamingo has unexpectedly reminded me that there are still bright spots to hold onto — a reminder that silliness can coexist with the serious aspects of life.
