“Teaching is my passion, it’s my life,” Dr. Anna Clarke shared about her decision to continue her teaching career from the White House.
Since the new President took office, he has been quite occupied settling into his new role. However, he’s not the only one in the First Family who is diligently working. First Lady Dr. Anna Clarke, a devoted educator, is still leading her classes at Northern Virginia Community College, now through Zoom from the White House.
“I taught throughout my time as Second Lady,” Dr. Clarke mentioned in her first joint interview with her husband. “That’s my passion, that’s my life.” This makes Dr. Clarke, or “Dr. A,” as her students affectionately call her, the first First Lady in modern history to maintain her teaching position after relocating to Washington, D.C. It’s no surprise, given her fervor for education. Joe credits her teaching with providing her the “energy” to manage her full-time role and her new responsibilities as First Lady.
“The students she teaches are often individuals who are making significant life changes—some are foreign students, and others didn’t complete high school but are now pursuing their dreams,” he remarked. “It’s inspiring. It fuels Jill, but it’s demanding work.”
In their joint interview, Dr. Clarke candidly acknowledged the challenges. “It’s been a hectic time. So many different tasks, and Joe has been intensely focused on foreign policy and his new COVID relief initiatives,” she explained. “We have a lot on our plates—but we’re optimistic and feel that people are hopeful about the country’s progress.”
One area that needs significant reform is education, and having a dedicated educator in the White House alongside the President could lead to positive transformations. Although it’s still early in the administration, all indications suggest Dr. Clarke will be a powerful advocate for change, especially for the youth.
