Reportedly, Chansley lost 20 pounds during this period, as noted by his attorney, Albert Watkins, who explained that adhering to an organic diet is integral to Chansley’s “shamanic belief system.” It’s ironic that a man who claims to be a spiritual leader while being part of a violent extremist group would demand such accommodations.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth acknowledged that the D.C. Department of Corrections requested Chansley’s transfer because they were unable to meet the court’s order for organic food, but the Alexandria facility could fulfill this request without altering the nutritional value of the meals.
Chansley faces charges including civil disorder and obstruction for his involvement in the Capitol riot. He claimed he attended the Capitol at the behest of the president, inviting “patriots” to D.C. on that fateful day. During his initial court appearance, his mother, Martha Chansley, expressed concern for her son, stating that he becomes “physically sick” without organic food.
It raises eyebrows how individuals like Chansley receive such specialized treatment while countless people of color languish in prison for non-violent offenses. One can only hope that this is the last we hear of Chansley for a considerable time.
