As someone who also has implants and is scheduled for removal soon, I was curious to learn more about her experience. However, after experiencing numbness in her right arm, Lily began to question whether she needed to have her implants taken out. Through her research, she discovered that her specific type of breast implants had been recalled some time ago. To clarify, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration initiated the recall on July 24, 2019, and Allergan launched a campaign as of July 1, 2020, to inform patients about the BIOCELL recall of textured breast implants.
“My implants have been recalled,” Lily shares in her video. “Why didn’t my doctor inform me?” While she does not mention Allergan’s role in this notification, it’s evident that she only learned of the recall during her own investigation due to her health concerns.
Why Were These Implants Recalled?
According to the FDA, they requested Allergan to pull all BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders off the market due to the risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a type of cancer affecting the immune system. The FDA’s data indicates that the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan’s BIOCELL textured implants is approximately six times greater than with textured implants from other manufacturers. This is alarming, considering that as of September 12, 2019, there were 573 reported cases of BIA-ALCL, with 481 involving the recalled implants.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that BIA-ALCL is rare but highly treatable and occurs more frequently in patients with textured implants. They advise that patients should consult their surgeons if they wish to have their implants removed for any reason, as all medical devices carry risks.
What Should Patients Do?
What should patients like Lily do if they find out they have recalled implants? The FDA recommends that for patients without symptoms, removal is not currently advised due to the low risk of developing BIA-ALCL, but any concerns should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Lily emphasizes her commitment to a healthy lifestyle, which may surprise some given her past decision to get implants. Now armed with knowledge, she is opting for removal and encourages others to take control of their choices. “Worrying about things you can’t change is just a way to torture yourself,” she states. “Are you going to let your worries consume you, or are you going to take charge of your mind? I know my decision.”
