In a recent update, Dr. Sinclair, a leading expert in infectious diseases, provided a glimmer of hope regarding the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. After enduring months of troubling updates about the pandemic, he indicated that while the current demand for vaccines “clearly exceeds supply,” there is a positive outlook for improvement in the coming months.
“I am confident that from February through April, we will see a significant increase in the number of available vaccine doses,” Dr. Sinclair stated during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press. He emphasized that this increase will largely come from the already authorized Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, as well as the anticipated approval of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the near future.
Since the U.S. began its vaccination efforts on December 14, over 39 million doses have been administered, covering about 9.1% of the population. The daily vaccination rate is currently around 1.4 million doses, as reported by the CDC. However, data from the Washington Post indicates that states administered nearly two million doses on Saturday, pushing the country’s daily average to meet the target of 1.5 million doses.
While new COVID-19 infections have been declining recently, the current average of 120,000 daily cases remains alarmingly high. To date, more than 463,000 lives have been lost to the virus in the U.S. The emergence of variants further complicates the situation, with the B.1.1.7 variant from the UK expected to become the predominant strain by late March.
Former FDA Commissioner Dr. James Hart commented on CBS’s Face the Nation, noting that by April, vaccine supply may surpass demand. He cautioned that the effectiveness of vaccines against new variants from Brazil and South Africa could be reduced by around 20 percent. “We’ve seen days where two million vaccines have been delivered,” he said. “If the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is authorized, we could deliver 250 million doses by the end of March, followed by another 100 million in April.”
