To My Community Members Who Are Reluctant to Wear Masks

It’s been over a year since the emergence of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, and during this time, we’ve gained valuable insights into the virus. COVID-19 spreads between individuals through respiratory droplets released when we speak, cough, or sneeze. One notable symptom of the virus is a loss of taste or smell, and both social distancing and mask-wearing are effective measures in curbing its spread. Masks truly have the potential to save lives.

Yet, I frequently encounter individuals who choose not to wear masks. Whether at the grocery store, pharmacy, or school drop-off, I see maskless individuals or those wearing masks incorrectly (like a chin strap). While I’ve refrained from approaching them to inquire about their choices, I’m not concerned with their reasoning. Their decisions ultimately put others at risk.

Such self-centered attitudes are dangerous.

I can almost hear the thoughts of those reading this: Who is this person, and why should they dictate my actions? I don’t wish to be confrontational about mask-wearing. I’m not here to police anyone. However, I’m trying to live my life, and wearing a mask is crucial for that. It protects both you and me, along with everyone else around us. Moreover, I’m not the only one advocating for masks; healthcare professionals, scientists, and our government are all emphasizing their importance. As of February 2nd, masks are mandated on public transportation within the United States, among other settings.

So why the ongoing resistance? Many seem to argue that it infringes on personal freedoms and rights. Some contend that wearing a mask should be a personal choice that the government shouldn’t impose. Others believe certain situations, like being outdoors, are inherently safe. And then there are those who simply don’t care, viewing masks as uncomfortable or an inconvenience.

I understand that masking isn’t ideal. They can be uncomfortable and may complicate communication, especially for those of us who are hard of hearing. Nevertheless, they are vital in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), masks protect both the wearer and those around them.

The CDC advises wearing masks in public settings, at gatherings, and anywhere people are present to safeguard everyone involved and curb the spread of the virus.

But masks do more than just save lives; they enhance our quality of life. They allow us to see loved ones more often, to have socially distanced interactions, and to continue working. My partner’s business thrived during the pandemic thanks to mask adherence and following CDC guidelines. Schools can remain open, ensuring that children receive the social interaction and education they need for their mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, a dear friend was able to visit her father in the ICU due to a sudden health crisis—something I wish I could have done when my own mother passed away virtually.

I empathize with the hesitation about wearing masks. I get the frustration. However, wearing a mask is not an act of oppression; it is a gesture of care and kindness toward yourself, your friends, and your community. Please think of your neighbors who suffer from asthma or your immunocompromised loved ones and consider wearing a mask. The sooner we all mask up, the sooner we can emerge from this situation stronger and better.
