In a recent blog entry, Gwyneth Paltrow, known for her extravagant lifestyle brand Goop, has suggested that detoxing may assist those suffering from long-term COVID-19 symptoms. While she often promotes high-end products, her endorsement of certain supplements to tackle lingering effects of the virus raises concerns.

Paltrow revealed her ongoing recovery from COVID-19, stating, “I had COVID-19 early on, and it left me with some long-tail fatigue and brain fog.” After consulting with her functional medicine practitioner, she adopted a new diet inspired by his book, which she noted is both “keto” and “plant-based.” The regimen also includes fasting until 11 a.m. and avoiding sugar and alcohol, but lacks scientific backing for improving COVID-19 symptoms.

In her post, she details a variety of supplements her practitioner recommended, ranging from butyrate for gut health to various vitamins and minerals. While these claims may sound appealing, the effectiveness of these supplements has not been validated by medical professionals, and a recent study indicated that vitamin C and zinc do not alleviate COVID-19 symptoms.

Instead of following Gwyneth’s advice, it’s wise to consult a qualified healthcare provider for persistent symptoms following COVID-19. Many medical centers now offer specialized clinics for long COVID care, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.
