A heartbreaking incident occurred in Texas as an 11-year-old boy named Lucas Hernandez tragically lost his life amidst frigid temperatures and widespread power outages. Following a severe winter storm that left countless residents without electricity, Lucas was found unresponsive on Tuesday.
The day prior, Lucas had been joyfully playing in the snow, according to his mother, Maria Gonzalez. After enjoying dinner, he snuggled up under several blankets with his 3-year-old half-brother in their unheated mobile home located in Conroe, approximately 40 miles from Houston. “He seemed fine,” Maria recounted. “He had dinner, played, and then went to sleep.”

Reports indicate some fatalities were due to carbon monoxide poisoning, while others, like a 75-year-old man in Crosby, succumbed after his oxygen machine malfunctioned due to power loss. Hypothermia has also claimed many lives.
The crisis has worsened as overwhelmed water systems, caused by frozen pipes, have left approximately 14.6 million Texans—nearly half of the state’s population—under a boil-water advisory, according to Toby Baker, Executive Director of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Over 1,225 water supply systems are affected.
“I am devastated; I never thought this would happen,” Martinez said. “We did everything we could, including performing CPR until the fire department arrived, but it was too late.”
Currently, the family is raising funds to repatriate Lucas’ body to Honduras, his birthplace, where he hoped to reunite with his grandparents. The GoFundMe effort has surpassed its initial goal of $5,000, amassing over $35,000.
