Disney+ has issued a content warning for 18 classic episodes of The Muppet Show, indicating the presence of potentially harmful material. Fans who recently indulged in the show’s five original seasons may have noticed the same disclaimer previously applied to older films such as Dumbo and The Aristocats.
Despite The Muppet Show‘s reputation as a family-friendly program, some of its content reflects outdated sensibilities. The flagged episodes feature various problematic elements, such as Johnny Cash performing alongside a Confederate flag, a muppet portraying a Gypsy while singing an offensive song titled “I Sniff the Rose,” and Steve Martin mocking Chinese languages. Additionally, the episodes contain other negative stereotypes regarding Native peoples and individuals from the Middle East.
The disclaimer reads: “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
Disney has stated, “As part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark conversation and open dialogue on history that affects us all.”
The episodes affected include guest appearances from notable figures such as Cash, Steve Martin, and Joan Baez, among others. However, an episode featuring writer Chris Langham was omitted entirely due to his conviction for serious crimes, including child pornography.
While some online voices criticize this move as part of “cancel culture,” it’s important to recognize that the show remains accessible. It is simply being re-evaluated in light of societal growth and awareness of harmful behaviors. Enjoy The Muppet Show, but remember that acknowledging past mistakes helps us create a better future.
