Why I Won’t Disable Ad-Tracking on Social Media

In today’s digital landscape, discussions about internet privacy and data security are everywhere. Friends often caution about the risks of divulging our online behaviors to major social media giants like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. They urge us to tighten our privacy settings, clear cookies, and even log out or remove apps that might be eavesdropping.

I understand the importance of safeguarding our personal information. After all, why should corporations profit from collecting, storing, and selling my data? Is my information lumped together with others, or is there a detailed file on me somewhere compiled from my Google searches about everything from unique hobbies to unusual queries?

Yet, despite these valid concerns urging me to enhance my social media privacy and use ad blockers, I refuse to comply.

It might sound superficial, but how else am I supposed to discover what to buy? I genuinely enjoy well-targeted ads that highlight exactly what I need to convince me to part with my spouse’s hard-earned cash. (Sure, I contribute financially too, but it’s amusing to think of my spending coming from him rather than my own earnings—let’s not dive into the psychology behind that.)

Without these apps tracking my online activities, how would I know what’s available for purchase? I’m not exactly a trendsetter, and I don’t follow Instagram influencers because they usually leave me feeling inadequate. Plus, I can’t even stroll through my local Target anymore (don’t judge me for loving Target’s affordable styles!).

Let’s be honest: Advertisers are going to target me anyway, so why not let them show me relevant products? Be it skincare, accessories, or home goods (though rarely kid-related items because, let’s face it, this is about me), most of my favorite purchases have come from Facebook and Instagram ads. Once I buy something, I’m immediately hit with more suggestions in that category! They seamlessly follow me across various social media platforms and websites I visit.

What a convenience! If the timing is right, I might even cancel a previous order and opt for something more appealing based on their suggestions. Need a kimono-style dress? They’ve got it. Want oversized clothing that looks like a walking sack? Here are the options! Obsessed with K-pop jewelry? You bet. Into South Korean skincare? Absolutely! Looking for quirky home decor, like corgi butt pillows with adorably placed buttons? Yes, please!

I don’t even have to think twice about it! It’s like they’re tapping into my inner desires, presenting me with all the shiny, fancy, and irresistibly cute items I crave.

While not every product lives up to expectations, I’d estimate 85% of my purchases are accurate. (Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but I’ve conveniently forgotten the few disappointments.) And when I showcase my buys on social media, I receive compliments! Who doesn’t enjoy a little praise? I appreciate the affirmations—whether they’re genuine or not—as it boosts my confidence in my shopping choices.

I even went so far as to add more ear piercings to showcase my love for accessories, because if online shopping isn’t about filling my aesthetic void, I don’t know what is.
