Candace Owens Is Definitely Not the Right Choice

My introduction to Candace Owens came unexpectedly during a late-night scroll through Facebook. Why should you be aware of her? Because her rhetoric poses significant harm to everyone, regardless of race or background. This is particularly concerning as she gears up for a potential presidential run in 2024.

At first glance, Candace may seem like a striking Black woman, exuding determination. However, once she starts speaking, ignorance pours out. Don’t believe me? Take a look at her Twitter account—but be warned, you might leave it feeling less informed.

A quick glance at her Wikipedia entry might make you feel nauseous before you even finish the first sentence. She is described as a conservative author, commentator, and activist. According to Webster’s Dictionary, an activist is someone who “campaigns to bring about political or social change.” If you explore her statements or read her tweets (and the reactions from her supporters), the kind of “change” she advocates for is alarming.

Some of her most shocking comments emerged in a Facebook video I stumbled upon a few months back, which was disturbingly supported by some of my friends. This was just days after George Floyd’s murder, a moment when her words were particularly tone-deaf. Owens claimed, “There was so much pressure for me to go with the popular opinion about who George Floyd was. We are being sold a lot of lies at the detriment to the Black community, at the detriment to the white community, and at the detriment to America as a whole. Our culture is unique from other communities because we are the only community that caters to the bottom denominator of our society. Not every Black American is a criminal. Not every Black American is committing crimes. But we are unique in that we are the only people that fight and scream and demand support for the people in our community that are up to no good.”

Every single one of her remarks deserves a collective eye roll. I would certainly categorize Candace as someone who is contributing to the issues she claims to address.

It’s frightening to think that Owens is contemplating a presidential bid in 2024. She’s adept at manipulating many Americans into accepting her narrative without question. Republicans appreciate her because she is one of the few Black individuals who aligns with their agenda.

Owens professes her love for America, yet she continually undermines the very people who built this nation. Her reckless speech demonstrates a disdain for Black lives. The animosity she harbors seems to be a driving force behind the chaos we’ve experienced over the last four years with the previous administration. Her belief that she could lead a fractured nation like ours reveals a profound disconnect in her understanding, as pointed out by Fabiola Cineas in Philadelphia Magazine, where she trivializes concerns about white nationalism and labels transgender identities as “disorders.”

Candace does not radiate the qualities of someone who truly loves her country; if she did, she would foster unity rather than division. She would not seek to reignite the flames that former President Trump ignited. I wouldn’t trust the previous administration with my life, and I certainly wouldn’t place my trust in Candace. It’s time for the American public to wake up. Haven’t we been deceived enough? Let’s not support Candace Owens for the White House in 2024 or beyond. Can you imagine her meetings with foreign leaders or her contributions to the WHO? It’s absurd!

Candace is squandering the platform she has, which was never particularly strong to begin with. She needs to recognize her identity as a Black woman; her marriage to a white man doesn’t change that reality. Her polished appearance and ability to provoke the Republican base do not equate to her qualification for presidency. Hopefully, the Republican party has learned from the extreme divisive rhetoric that led to the Capitol Riots on January 6. Individuals with common sense understand that language carries weight and can either uplift or harm. Hers primarily inflicts harm. I will never cast my vote for Candace Owens, and I hope others feel the same.
