A Pennsylvania man became embroiled in legal trouble after his ex-girlfriend turned him in to the FBI following his derogatory remarks towards her. Richard Thompson, who participated in the January 6 Capitol riot, sent his ex various images and videos capturing his actions during the insurrection. After he called her a “moron,” she decided to report him, providing the FBI with key evidence.
Since the January 6 incident, the FBI has been inundated with tips as they work to identify and prosecute those involved in the chaos at the Capitol. Court documents reveal that Thompson was arrested and charged with obstructing official proceedings, along with several misdemeanors for entering restricted areas and disorderly conduct.
His communication with his ex began on January 5, when he informed her of his travel plans to Washington. On the day of the riot, he texted her updates about being inside the Capitol, claiming, “we stormed the building.” He even shared videos from inside the Capitol, further implicating himself. Later in the day, he insulted her intelligence by stating, “If you can’t see the election was stolen you’re a moron.” Following this, she seemingly attempted to argue with him, but he continued to reiterate false claims about the election.
Thompson’s next court date is set for March 1, but he is prohibited from contacting potential witnesses, including his ex-girlfriend, during the proceedings.
