Op-Ed: My Affection for Meghan and Harry Has Grown—William and Charles, However, Are Disappointing

As soon as I learned that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry would be sitting down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey, I was eagerly anticipating the revelations. I’ve followed their journey from the start, and it’s disheartening to see how things have unfolded. The interview was bound to be compelling, but the couple’s transparency, empathy, and honesty genuinely took me by surprise. Taking on the monarchy is no small feat, yet they recognized the importance of speaking out despite the risks.

Meghan opened up to Oprah about her darkest moments, revealing that she felt so overwhelmed that she contemplated suicide. She didn’t necessarily wish to die, but believed her absence would alleviate everyone else’s struggles. This resonated deeply with me, as I have faced similar feelings. Yet, Meghan demonstrated a strength I admire by seeking help, only to have her pleas dismissed by an institution that prioritized appearances over well-being. It’s shameful, and their indifference is evident.

I can’t help but wonder which members of Harry’s family speculated about the potential skin color of their son, Archie. While I understand why he won’t disclose names, I have my suspicions—most notably about his brother and father. Oprah mentioned that Harry clarified it wasn’t his grandmother or grandfather involved in those discussions. Imagining the shock and anger that question must have sparked in Harry is unfathomable, especially as he had to relay that to Meghan. As a biracial child, Archie’s skin color should never have been a concern. He belongs to the family, regardless of his appearance. This was another attempt to marginalize Meghan Markle.

As a Black mother of a biracial child, I understand how hurtful such comments can be. People often feel entitled to comment on the appearance of mixed-race children, whether it’s doctors, classmates, or even strangers in a store. But when it comes from your own family? That’s a wound that’s hard to heal. I would be devastated if my loved ones expressed concern over my child’s skin color.

One quality I truly admire about Meghan is her grace under pressure. She could have easily resorted to bitterness and resentment, but she chose to handle the situation with tact. Throughout the interview, there was no malice in her tone as she described the injustices she faced. This speaks volumes about her character. Many of us would have spilled every ounce of tea we could muster, but she maintained her composure. I hope those in the royal family feel the weight of their actions and the public outcry that has ensued.

When Oprah mentioned that people were blaming Meghan for “Megxit,” Meghan was taken aback. It’s clear that the narrative often painted her as the sole decision-maker, which is completely inaccurate. Harry has been part of this world for decades, and it was a mutual choice they made as partners, not something imposed by Meghan.

Harry deserves immense credit for breaking free from the constraints of the royal family. He openly expressed feeling “trapped” by the institution, and he took the time to educate himself about racism. While Meghan was cautious in her use of the term, Harry didn’t shy away from it. His commitment to supporting his wife and family shows he is a true ally.

Harry understands the weight of his mother’s legacy and the impact it had on him. He recognized the parallels between his own experiences and those of Meghan, and he was determined to protect his family from a similar fate. Standing up to the British monarchy is no small feat, and he fully grasped the sacrifices involved. Yet, he prioritized his family’s safety above all.

Prince Charles and Prince William have behaved disgracefully. How could Charles abandon his own son and grandson? The fact that Harry feels the need to mend their relationship is absurd; it’s his father who should be making the effort. As for William, it’s disheartening to see how far he has strayed from the loving brother he once was, prioritizing appearances over familial bonds.

I’m relieved that Meghan finally had the chance to share her story. When Harry revealed that they were making deals primarily for security, my heart broke. Their family should have the right to feel safe and secure, free from the shadows of past abuses.

Nevertheless, there’s a sense of relief that envelops them. They can finally live life on their own terms, ensuring their children experience the same freedom. I’m genuinely excited to see what they achieve next.
