The Toy Chronicles: Capturing My Kids’ Cherished Toys Through Photography

As parents or caregivers, we often find ourselves in a constant battle against the endless tide of toys. Either we are diligently tidying up, only to watch the kids scatter them across the floor moments later, or we’re nagging the little ones to clean up their mess. Let’s be honest; it can be a bit of a struggle.

At my home, the LEGO bricks seem to multiply and occupy the floor daily. About eight years ago, during yet another toy cleanup session, I found myself exclaiming, “For the LOVE of chocolate, GET THESE TOYS OFF THE FLOOR!” My vacuum could take no more of those pesky perler beads.

In that moment of frustration, I decided to start a photography project capturing my children’s toys. I wanted to preserve the memories of the items that held such meaning for them, even if they sometimes felt like a nuisance to me. Thus, The Toy Chronicles began.

How to Document Your Kids’ Favorite Toys

If you also want to document the toys your kids adore, here’s how you can do it:

First, make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. Avoid asking your children to play with the toys while you photograph them; that can be more annoying than fun. Instead, capture the toys as unique characters, each with their own story. Think about how to portray their personalities through your photos.

Whether it’s a beloved movie character or a favorite LEGO set, focus on what your kids are interested in during this season of their lives. My daughters have always loved making their figures “talk,” so I have countless images of their favorite characters.

You don’t need an expensive camera for this project. While I use a DSLR, a smartphone camera can do the trick just as well. Here are a few tips to enhance your photography skills:

  1. Get Low: Position yourself at the toy’s level to convey a sense of life and personality. Squat down next to your toy to capture its essence.
  2. Hero Shots: Take shots from a slightly lower angle to make the toy appear larger-than-life. Lock focus on the toy’s face to draw the viewer’s eye.
  3. Seek Light: Regardless of the camera you use, lighting is crucial. Natural light from a window yields far better results than artificial lighting. Pay attention to shadows and use them to your advantage.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed photographing my kids’ toys, and they often contribute ideas. Listening to their imaginative playtime provides endless inspiration. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the clutter, I choose to focus on capturing these memories, ensuring they remain vivid even after the toys are long outgrown.

Take a moment to find that special toy your child cherishes, be it a beloved stuffed animal, a costume, or an action figure. Document it. You’ll cherish those memories, and your child will too.
