Raise your hand if you’ve been yearning for ‘The Nanny’ to be available on a streaming platform! Fran Fine is making her grand entrance from Flushing, Queens, to HBO Max, and you can almost hear the excited cheers from every thirtysomething millennial. Yes, that’s right! Fran, Mr. Sheffield, Niles the butler, Cece, Sylvia, Yeta, and the three Sheffield kids will be primed for binge-watching starting April 1st.
For those who need a quick reminder (how could you forget?), ‘The Nanny’ aired from 1993 to 1999. Fran Drescher portrayed the stylish bridal saleswoman turned unexpected nanny who brought her charm, humor, and that iconic laugh to the Sheffield household, which was reeling from the loss of their mother. The slow-building romance between Fran and her boss was a joy to watch, peppered with hilarious moments. The stellar cast, including Niles, Cece, Fran’s mom Sylvia, and the Sheffield kids Brighton, Maggie, and Gracie, made the show a true delight.
Queen Fran Drescher herself shared the exciting news on Instagram, and can we just take a moment to appreciate her radiant presence? “We’re coming to HBOMAX WooHoo!!! 4/1/21 GO!” she exclaimed in her video.
Back in April 2020, Drescher mentioned to E! News that she believes Fran and Max, who end up marrying after a long courtship, would still be together today. She suggested that Fran might be involved in fashion or politics, stating, “I think Fran would have gotten involved in a fashion blog on how to look like a million bucks on a shoestring budget. Or maybe she might’ve gotten involved in local politics.”
If that wasn’t enough thrilling news, Drescher is also working on adapting ‘The Nanny’ into a Broadway musical alongside her ex-husband and co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson, as well as Rachel Bloom, the creator of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.’ “Peter came up with the brilliant idea that Fran and Max moved back to New York because he missed Broadway,” she explained. “And then the whole first season would be about him producing the show that’s actually on Broadway.”
With everything that’s transpired, this nostalgic series is a perfect remedy for a challenging year. A Broadway show will be an exciting event to anticipate, but for now, we’re all thrilled to stream the original series.
As the theme song aptly suggests, “Who would have guessed that the girl we described was just exactly what the doctor prescribed?”
