There Are Some Positive Changes from the Pandemic I Hope to Keep

This morning, my son sat at the piano wearing his pajamas, bare feet, and a baseball cap, pouring his heart into the music. He plays every day now, and it brings him so much joy.

Just a year ago, he was begging to quit piano lessons. Getting him to practice felt like a constant battle. Our lives were packed with activities, and we often felt frantic trying to keep up with the schedule of our family of six. When we were home, he longed for downtime. The piano was just another task on our never-ending to-do list.

This past year has stripped away that relentless pace. Now, my little boy hops onto the piano bench in the mornings, playing before breakfast. He takes breaks between remote school sessions to play a few notes. If he passes the piano, he stops to create music. These days, he plays constantly—and without the pressure of a packed schedule, he plays purely for the joy of it!

As I listened to him today, I noticed how much he’s improved. His fingers glide across the keys, and he uses the pedal skillfully. He leans in, fully immersed in the music.

And I find myself pondering an important question: Where do we go from here?

I yearn for some semblance of the past before COVID changed our world, yet I also want to preserve the newfound joy we’ve discovered. I pray for the pandemic to end, for healing, and for a sense of togetherness among all of us.

But as the notes from the piano fill the air, I reflect on the hectic race we used to run. With the vaccine rollout and a slow return to “normal,” it feels like a pivotal moment. We might have a say in how we choose to re-enter our lives.

What have we learned through this experience? What will we hold onto? What will we let go of? How can we simplify our lives when the rush resumes? Can we be more mindful of what we pursue?

The melodies from the piano are prompting me to consider the next chapter. Where do we go from here? And what were we racing toward before?
