Earlier in March, Major returned to Delaware for training after biting a U.S. Secret Service employee on March 8, 2021. Both Major and his older brother, Champ, were only back at the White House for a short time before this most recent incident.
President Biden previously explained that Major’s reactions are typical for a guard dog when confronted with unfamiliar people. “He’s a sweet dog. Eighty-five percent of the people there love him,” Biden remarked. Despite his occasional nips, Major is known for his friendly demeanor and wagging tail.
The American Kennel Club emphasizes that German Shepherds are intelligent dogs that require consistent training and mental engagement. They advise potential owners to be ready for the commitment necessary to train and socialize these high-energy pets. While President Biden undoubtedly cares for his dogs, the demands of his job may limit his ability to provide the necessary training.
Perhaps it’s time for Biden to consider bringing in a professional dog trainer, like Cesar Millan, for a live-streamed obedience class on the White House lawn. Major and Champ are both great dogs; they just might need some extra guidance.
