As we approach the one-year mark since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, it seems we are slowly but surely making our way towards the end. Much of this progress can be attributed to the incredible work done by scientists worldwide who have focused on overcoming the novel coronavirus.
In the U.S., three vaccines—Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson—are now authorized for emergency use, showing remarkable effectiveness that once seemed unattainable. Currently, around 28% of the population has received at least one dose, with approximately three million vaccinations taking place daily. This rapid rollout has led many to contemplate life after the pandemic, though confusion still lingers about what activities are safe and permissible. To clarify, we consulted Dr. Alex Martinez, MD, an Internal Medicine Physician based in San Francisco, about the recommended practices for those who are vaccinated.
Vaccinated Individuals Can Reconnect with Friends and Family—With Caution
After months of adhering to strict public health measures—including social distancing and mask-wearing—vaccination allows for some relaxation of these rules. According to current CDC guidelines, vaccinated individuals can gather indoors with other vaccinated people from different households without masks or social distancing. Additionally, fully vaccinated individuals may visit one unvaccinated household indoors without masks, provided those unvaccinated are not at high risk for severe illness, as noted by Dr. Martinez.
Traveling Post-Vaccination: Lower Risk but Remain Vigilant
Dr. Martinez points out that the CDC has not updated travel guidelines for vaccinated individuals yet. However, he emphasizes that “once vaccinated, traveling by air or car poses very low risk.” Despite this, all standard public health precautions, including mask-wearing and social distancing, should still be practiced. The CDC’s current travel guidelines still recommend testing before and after travel and self-quarantine afterward. Dr. Martinez anticipates that updates will come soon as vaccination rates continue to rise.
Indoor Dining May Still Be on Hold
Many are eager to return to indoor dining, but Dr. Martinez suggests caution. He advises against dining in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces due to the emergence of new variants and potential reduced vaccine efficacy against them.
Quarantine Rules for Fully Vaccinated Individuals
Current CDC guidelines state that fully vaccinated individuals can skip quarantine after exposure, as long as it’s been less than three months since their last vaccine dose. Evidence suggests that vaccinated people are less likely to spread the virus through asymptomatic cases. However, it remains unclear how long vaccine protection lasts and how variants might affect immunity. Dr. Martinez predicts that the three-month exemption could expand, as vaccinated individuals likely retain protection against the original virus for at least six months. This guideline, however, does not apply to residents or workers in healthcare settings due to their higher risk.
Caution is Still Key for Vaccinated Individuals
While we are closer to the end of the pandemic than we were a year ago, it is essential not to get complacent. Vaccinated individuals should still avoid large gatherings and continue wearing masks, as Dr. Martinez warns that the current plateau of new cases—around 50,000 daily—is too high. He believes that if we maintain our vigilance, the likelihood of a surge will decrease, and we can look forward to a return to normalcy.
His final message is clear: “We have a chance to turn the tide; there is light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s hang in there and not jeopardize our progress.”

Summary
As vaccination rates increase, it’s important for vaccinated individuals to understand the current safety measures still in place. While there are some allowances for gatherings and travel, caution is still necessary, particularly concerning indoor dining and large gatherings. Staying informed and adhering to guidelines will be crucial as we work towards the end of the pandemic.
