Some Pandemic Lessons I Hope to Keep

This morning, my son plopped down at the piano in his pajamas, barefoot and sporting a baseball cap, playing with pure passion. It’s become part of his daily routine, and he absolutely loves it.

Just a year ago, he was begging to quit. Practicing was a constant struggle amidst our chaotic schedules. Our family of six was always on the go, juggling school, work, and activities. Home felt like a place to unwind, and the piano was just another chore we had to check off our list. We were always racing against the clock and often running on empty.

But the frantic pace has slowed this past year. Now, he hops on the piano bench in his PJs every morning before breakfast. He plays during breaks from remote learning, and even when he’s just passing by, he’ll stop to create music. He plays… all the time. Free from the pressure of our previous busy lifestyle, he plays for the pure joy of it!

Watching him today, I can hear the progress he’s made. His fingers dart across the keys, his feet expertly maneuver the pedal, and he leans in, fully immersed in the music.

Yet a question lingers: Where do we go from here?

I find myself torn between wanting to return to the pre-COVID hustle and wishing to hold onto what we’ve discovered during this time. While I pray for an end to the virus and hope for healing through togetherness, I can’t help but reflect on the frantic race we used to live.

As the vaccine rollout continues and the world edges toward normalcy, it feels like a moment of great significance. Perhaps we have the power to choose how we ease back into life. What valuable lessons have we learned? What habits will we embrace, and which will we leave behind? Can we slow down when life picks up again? Will we be more present? What are we truly striving for?

The notes from the piano speak volumes about what lies ahead and prompt me to reconsider what we were rushing towards before.
