Details surrounding the shooting are still emerging, but it has been confirmed that the incident marks the third mass shooting in the U.S. in a mere two weeks. This follows a horrific shooting spree at three spas in Atlanta, which claimed eight lives—six of them Asian women—as well as a tragic event at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, where ten people lost their lives.
Lt. Jennifer Amat, spokesperson for the Orange Police Department, reported that officers responded to calls of gunfire around 5:30 PM at the two-story office complex that houses various small businesses, including an insurance office, a marriage therapist, and a phone repair shop. The violence reportedly began inside one of the office suites before spilling out into a courtyard area. Investigators are currently working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
Upon arrival, police exchanged gunfire with the suspected shooter, who was also injured and transported to the hospital. It remains uncertain whether the suspect’s injuries were self-inflicted or caused by police fire. Lt. Amat characterized this incident as the most severe the city of Orange has experienced in 24 years.
California Democratic Representative, Lisa Turner, expressed her sorrow regarding the shooting, stating she is keeping the victims and their families in her thoughts as more information unfolds. Governor Gavin Newsom also described the event as “horrifying and heartbreaking.” The recurring cycle of gun violence prompts a pressing question: how many more tragedies must occur before decisive action is taken?
