With more vaccines rolling out and many states in the U.S. moving towards full reopening, people who have mostly adhered to quarantine guidelines over the past year are finally getting their shots and resuming “normal life.” This has led to a wave of individuals proclaiming, “I literally haven’t gone outside in a year!” and “I haven’t seen anyone besides my family since March 2020!” However, comedian Amy Johnson isn’t buying it. In a hilarious video, she takes aim at those who claim to have been cooped up at home while knowing quite well that many have been living in pandemic “pods” as large as a classroom.
In the video, Amy looks into the camera and mimics the common pandemic lament we’ve heard so often: “No, you don’t understand, I haven’t seen anyone in like, two years, this is my first time leaving my house.” But she quickly challenges herself, questioning, “Didn’t you get a manicure though?” To which her pandemic persona responds, “Yeah, but it’s crazy, I was crying for someone to touch me because I haven’t left my house in at least a year, maybe nine months.”
When pressed about attending a child’s birthday party, Amy insists, “Yes, but that’s just a kid’s party with 26 people from our pod.” And when confronted about a recent cruise, she defends herself, saying, “We did go on a Carnival Cruise, but it was just the people on the boat, they are in our pod, and honestly, that’s it. I haven’t left my house.”
Her fans found the video spot-on, with comments like “Unfortunately, I know people who would name dozens of others in their ‘pod’ throughout this whole thing” and “I can’t even send this to my family or friends because this is them!”
At the beginning of the pandemic, Amy and her family sheltered in a cottage on Martha’s Vineyard, where they even hosted an entertaining at-home cooking show. Although she enjoyed that venture, Amy expressed her longing for stand-up comedy. In May 2020, she told a publication, “I think it will return and be fine, but it will take a while. Are we gonna open it up and have people wearing bandanas over their mouths so you can’t even hear laughter? You need masks with good acoustics.”
