Bowen Yang delivers an unforgettable performance
The “Weekend Update” segment on Saturday Night Live is always a highlight, and the recent episode truly stood out. Cast member Bowen Yang took on the role of the iceberg that collided with the Titanic in 1912, finally sharing his humorous perspective on that infamous night.
With the anniversary of the Titanic sinking approaching, Yang’s character described it as a “really bizarre time of year” for him. Despite his attempts to move on, host Colin Jost kept bringing up the tragic event. “First of all, you came to where I work and you hit me,” Yang lamented, clearly frustrated to recount that fateful evening.
He recounted how he was simply “chilling” when he heard an unexpected “Irish cacophony,” and before he knew it, “half his ass was gone”—a detail he humorously claimed was his best feature. The social media reactions to the skit were instant and enthusiastic. SNL writer Emma Collins tweeted, “Writing this absurd yet brilliant skit with Bowen Yang, who is the Beyoncé of comedy, was pure joy!”
Yang humorously expressed his irritation at being blamed for the tragedy, arguing instead that the water should take the blame because “They drowned, bitch. No one’s cancelling the ocean.”
Previously, Yang used his platform to address serious issues, including rising anti-Asian hate crimes. He mentioned that he would prefer to portray his character of a flamboyant Easter bunny instead. Balancing comedy with serious themes is a skill Yang showcases effortlessly.
In a conversation with NPR, he reflected on how SNL acts as a lens through which the absurdity of current events is filtered. “We’re all excited to write,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of their work during challenging times.
Ultimately, Yang expressed a desire to be seen beyond just “that iceberg.” He even teased his upcoming album, a hyper-pop EDM offering titled “Music,” sharing snippets of lyrics from one of the tracks, “Loverboy,” which were equally delightful.
With his deadpan delivery and comedic timing, it’s clear that Bowen Yang is poised to become a standout star on SNL.
