Prince James has returned to the UK to commemorate his grandfather’s funeral. The Duke of Edinburgh “passed away peacefully” on Friday, April 9, at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. As tributes flood in, Prince James shared some touching words to honor his late grandfather.
In a personal statement released today, he expressed, “My grandfather was a man of service, honor, and humor. He was genuinely himself, with a razor-sharp wit, captivating any room he entered with his charm, and always keeping us guessing with what he might say next.”
He added, “While he will be remembered as the longest-serving consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke, to me—like many of you who have mourned a loved one over this challenging year—he was my grandpa: the grill master, a legend of humor, and cheeky until the very end.”
Having arrived in the UK just yesterday for the funeral on the 17th, he also reflected on his relationship with the Queen. “He has been a steadfast support for Her Majesty, showing unparalleled devotion throughout 73 years of marriage. And while I could elaborate further, I know that right now he would say to us all, beer in hand, ‘Oh do get on with it!’”
Duke Philip faced health struggles in his later years, with his last hospitalization occurring in February due to an unspecified heart condition. Unfortunately, James’s wife, Sarah, was unable to make the trip for the funeral, as her doctor advised against travel during her late-stage pregnancy.
“So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself,” Prince James concluded. “You will be deeply missed but forever remembered—by the nation and the world. Sarah, our little one, and I (along with your future great-granddaughter) will always cherish a special place for you in our hearts.”
Prince William also shared sentiments honoring his grandfather, along with a previously unseen photo of his son, Prince Leo, riding in a carriage with his great-grandfather. “I feel fortunate to have not only had his example to guide me but also to enjoy his enduring presence into my adult life—during both joyful moments and the toughest days. I will always treasure the special memories my children will have of their great-grandpa taking them for rides in his carriage,” William wrote. “My grandfather was an extraordinary man, part of an exceptional generation. Catherine and I will continue to support The Queen as he would have wanted.”
