Disney Parks is taking significant steps to enhance gender expression among its cast members through a new initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity. Recognized for delivering exceptional service and creating unforgettable experiences, Disney is now focusing on ensuring that its cast members feel comfortable and authentic while on the job. This includes revised uniform policies that allow for greater freedom in personal expression, encompassing hairstyles, costumes, tattoos, nail styles, and jewelry.
This update is part of a broader strategy to promote inclusion, which is now recognized as the fifth element of Disney’s guiding principles, previously known as the “Four Keys”: Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. Josh D’Amaro, chair of Disney Parks, emphasized that Inclusion will be central to how the company engages with guests and collaborates within the team. “Our new approach offers more flexibility regarding personal expression related to gender-inclusive hairstyles, jewelry, nail styles, and costume choices; as well as allowing appropriate visible tattoos. These updates are designed to reflect today’s workplace and empower cast members to showcase their cultures and individuality,” D’Amaro stated.
He further highlighted that a diverse and expressive cast can enhance the magical experiences guests have at Disney parks. In addition to uniform changes, Disney is committed to reimagining attractions to be more inclusive and celebrating diverse narratives through initiatives like the upcoming enhancements to Jungle Cruise and projects centered around Princess Tiana.
“This is just the start of our journey towards a world where everyone feels they belong—creating a more diverse and inclusive Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products,” D’Amaro remarked. With the evolution of policies that now allow facial hair only introduced in 2012, these recent changes signify exciting progress in a short time.
