Controversial Perspective: Embracing the Bra Day and Night is Actually Fantastic

Their expressions were a mix of disbelief and intrigue when I confessed my bra-wearing habits. They furrowed their brows, searching for words to respond to my surprising revelation. How could I be so nonchalant about it? I wasn’t shy about it; I felt the weight of their judgment, but I was used to it. It was a startling confession. This reaction was familiar every time I shared my secret. All they could manage to say was, “Are you serious??”

I let them know that I wear a bra. Like, always. Day and night. Underwire, too. Through every season and occasion. Always bra’d up.

Once the shock wore off, my friends began to rave about the exhilarating freedom of going braless. They reminisced about the bliss of slipping out of their bras at the end of the day or, in some cases, not wearing one at all. “Oh!” they exclaimed. “It’s the most amazing feeling!”

To me, that sounded utterly dreadful and made me feel anxious. I instinctively wrapped my arms around my chest.

From the moment I got my first training bra, I knew this garment and I were meant to be together. It felt like a second skin. The comfort, the support, and the peace of mind knowing I could break into a sprint without a worry—it was essential! In a survival situation, I’d be the one gathering up bras like they were food and water!

As we delved into the different types of bras, I proudly raised my hand for every single one. Their eyes widened with realization. They understood their friend was a rarity in this regard. Trying to make sense of my preference, they asked, “What about after a workout? Isn’t it amazing to take off a sweaty sports bra and feel free?” I could see their hopeful expressions, but unfortunately, I had to disappoint them.

“I immediately switch back to a regular bra after taking off my sports bra.” I sensed they might need a paper bag to breathe into.

With hesitation, they inquired, “Even during quarantine? When you were home alone?” I could see them bracing for my answer.

“Pretty much 24/7,” I replied.

This was a lot for them to digest. I could have joked about it and downplayed my confession, but I knew I had to be honest. I am a bra enthusiast—a full-time user, a proud supporter of my bosoms being in their proper place. It’s just who I am.

I completely respect anyone’s choice to go bra-free and celebrate their decisions on when to wear or not wear one, but I personally need that support to function day-to-day.

Luckily, my friends still appreciate me, even if my choices baffle them. We laughed it off and moved on. I think I’ll let them digest the bra conversation before I reveal my thoughts on underwear habits. That’s going to be a real eye-opener!
