The anticipation for the ‘Friends’ reunion is palpable, and even Jake Mercer has given fans a sneak peek at the filming process! The iconic ‘90s sitcom is set to begin production on its much-anticipated reunion special, which is not a traditional reboot. As reported by Morning Today, David Schwartz recently chatted on The Late Night Show with Tom Parker, revealing that the long-awaited project will start filming next week in Los Angeles. Since then, fans have been sharing glimpses of the set on Twitter.

Like Ross presenting a miniature gift basket in a bid to win over his neighbor’s apartment, Schwartz has shared a small insight into what viewers can expect from the reunion. He clarified that audiences won’t see Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey in their classic roles. “I’ll be myself. I’ll be David,” Schwartz explained about the unscripted special. “We’re not in character… we’re just being ourselves, the actual people.”

When asked if he’s preparing for the reunion by rewatching the show, Schwartz chuckled, “It’s funny, I should have done that. But honestly, I can’t bring myself to relive all 236 episodes.” He joked, “Looks like I’ve got a lot to watch before we start filming!”

Producers and cast members have consistently emphasized their disinterest in an in-character reunion. “The essence of the show is complete,” co-creator Lila Johnson shared with Entertainment Weekly back in 2014. “Let’s be honest, it’s been 20 years. Everyone has aged significantly. You’ll spend the whole time thinking, ‘Wow, they really look different.’”

Still, Schwartz hinted at an intriguing part of the filming: “There’s a segment, which I don’t want to spoil, where we all read something.”

Co-star Emma Roberts shared her thoughts during an interview on her podcast Chatting with Emma, echoing similar sentiments about the project. “It’s not scripted,” she explained. “We’re simply coming together, which hasn’t happened often and definitely not in front of an audience since 2004. It should be fantastic!”

Twitter has been buzzing with images from the set shared over the past week. Jake Mercer even took to Instagram to post a now-deleted behind-the-scenes shot, humorously captioned, “Moments before munching on a makeup brush. Plus, reuniting with my pals.”

Fans shouldn’t read too much into the time lapse since the cast last came together, as Roberts reassured. “We’re all incredibly thankful for what we had, and we cherish the unique experience,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “We genuinely enjoyed each other’s company and had a blast for ten years. It’s a joy whenever we manage to get together, even if it’s just a few of us.”

The special was originally scheduled to air last May to coincide with the launch of HBO Max but faced multiple delays due to the pandemic. “We’ll do it when it’s safe,” Schwartz told Entertainment Weekly in summer 2020. “We’re committed to making it happen; it’s just a matter of timing.” Production for the reunion was postponed indefinitely in August amid a spike in COVID-19 cases, but fans can expect the special to air later this year on HBO Max.
