Officer Sarah Lee resigned shortly after the incident and was subsequently charged with manslaughter. The circumstances surrounding Malik’s death raise serious questions about our justice system and the need for substantial reform; when an officer fatally shoots a person of color, it is also an act of gun violence.
We must continue to shed light on the victims of police violence. Recently, three young boys in Chicago have also been lost to similar circumstances. Here are their stories:
Malik Johnson
Malik Johnson, a 20-year-old Black man, was shot during what should have been a routine traffic stop. Officer Sarah Lee, a veteran on the force, was charged on April 14th with manslaughter. Malik had a warrant for his arrest, reportedly due to a court date notice sent to the wrong address. He was driving with expired license plates and had an air freshener hanging from his rear-view mirror—an often-cited reason for police stops that disproportionately affects Black individuals, according to the ACLU of Minnesota.
Jaden Smith
Another tragic case is that of 18-year-old Jaden Smith, who was accused of theft at a Chicago Home Depot on March 30th. During the incident, Jaden reportedly fired a weapon at a security officer who was restraining him. When police arrived, a shootout ensued, resulting in Jaden’s death. His mother expressed her anguish, stating, “My heart goes out to the family because I know my son never intended for this to happen.”
Noah Rodriguez
Then there’s 13-year-old Noah Rodriguez, who was fatally shot by police on March 29th, just a short distance from his home. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and alleged that Noah was armed. After fleeing from the authorities, he was shot in the chest. His mother, Maria Rodriguez, shared her heartbreak, noting that her son aspired to be a police officer one day.
Carlos Martinez
Lastly, we have 22-year-old Carlos Martinez, who was pursued by police when he allegedly pulled out a gun and was subsequently shot by an officer. Carlos succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. His family is left grappling with the loss, voicing the painful reality that the phrase “police killed your son” carries immense weight.
In the past year, there have been 991 fatalities due to police shootings, with 213 occurring in just the first few months of 2021 alone—30 of which were Black individuals. These statistics are infuriating and should galvanize us to advocate for police reform and education. When victims are blamed for their own deaths, this reflects a dire need for change. Law enforcement must receive better training in de-escalation techniques to prevent resorting to deadly force.
Our nation is at a critical juncture. The calls for justice and accountability are becoming all too familiar. It is time to foster compassion, pursue education, and value all lives—young and old, regardless of color. How can we work together to ensure that police serve to protect and not to harm?
