Rahman did not specify when the visitor vaccination program would commence, noting that it will only begin after all residents receive their initial and second doses. He assured that vaccine supply would not be an issue, although it is still undecided whether travelers will need to pay for their vaccines. “I don’t think supply’s a problem in the Maldives because our population is relatively small,” he stated, emphasizing the support from various international organizations.

Tourism Goals and Challenges

The Maldives aims to welcome 1.5 million tourists this year. However, even if this target is reached, the country will still face a shortfall in tourism revenue due to the extensive travel restrictions and shutdowns experienced in 2020. “Reaching this year’s target will still leave us short of what the country needs,” Rahman explained, “but it’s certainly better than our forecasts from late 2020.”
