A devoted mother addressed Texas lawmakers this week, passionately urging them not to approve a bill that would label supportive parents of transgender children as abusive.
Raising young children can be incredibly challenging, and the concern and love we hold for them do not simply vanish when they reach adulthood. A Texas mom, who has a transgender son, made a heartfelt plea to legislators, asking them to reject a law that would criminalize parental support for their transgender children in seeking gender-affirming medical care.
“Honestly, these bills are a huge waste of time and taxpayer money, but here we are,” she stated. “When my son was just four, he asked if scientists could change him into a boy.” Initially, she admitted to being confused about her child’s identity. “I only knew he didn’t fit the mold of most girls his age, and there was a deep sadness within him,” she shared.
“I’m terrified to be here today,” said Lisa Harrington during her testimony before the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs. “I worry that speaking out could lead to my son, whom I adore beyond measure, being taken away from me if S.B. 1646 or S.B. 1311 passes.”
Senate Bill 1646 seeks to redefine child abuse to include parents and doctors who facilitate gender-affirming treatments for minors. Additionally, Senate Bill 1311 aims to eliminate liability insurance coverage for such procedures for certain children.
Harrington proudly mentioned her now-13-year-old son, who is thriving in seventh grade due to the unwavering support he receives from his family. “Removing that support or, worse, tearing him away from us because we chose to support him would have devastating consequences,” she warned.
“If this legislation becomes law, senators, that would be an act of child abuse,” Harrington asserted. “And I will hold each of you accountable every time a transgender child takes their own life due to lack of support, reminding you that their lives could have been saved if you chose differently.”
Texas Republicans argue that decisions regarding gender-affirming healthcare should be prohibited for minors, despite it being a choice that should involve the child, their parents, and medical professionals. Unfortunately, few senators were present to hear the opposition’s concerns.
“Like many of you, I initially thought he was asking for surgery, and I panicked,” Harrington explained. She clarified to the committee that gender-affirming surgeries are not performed on minors. “There are various options available for transgender youth, including hormone blockers that are completely reversible and clinically proven to save lives.”
Many parents, trans youth, and advocates voiced their opposition to the proposed laws during the committee session. You can view Harrington’s full testimony here.
