Alight Solutions

While many organizations struggled to adapt their support for remote employees during the pandemic, Alight Solutions—a cloud-based provider of financial services and human resources—managed to stay ahead. The company established various programs long before COVID-19 emerged, ensuring its nearly 10,000 staff members felt supported regardless of their work location.

Remote employees enjoy flexible working hours that cater to their schedules. Additionally, they have access to an array of online resources, including fitness classes, mental health services, and various workshops. Alight even modified its performance review process to account for the heightened stress of the pandemic, allowing employees to feel more at ease during video calls and promoting a healthier work-life balance by scheduling optional events during business hours.

BDO

BDO, an international accounting firm with American headquarters in Chicago, stepped up during the pandemic by offering financial support and adaptable workplace expectations to its employees. The firm revised performance review criteria to reflect the significant adjustments everyone had to make.

Many BDO employees were already accustomed to remote work before the pandemic, so the company leveraged this expertise to assist others in transitioning smoothly. They provided virtual resources, including training and mental health support, and created new programs to help working parents manage childcare while continuing their remote work. BDO also encouraged one-on-one meetings between managers and their teams to identify specific needs. Virtual activities for employees’ children were introduced, ensuring that parents had fewer distractions during the workday.

“Day-to-day flex culture has been the most helpful resource throughout my career at BDO. As a working parent, this flexibility has allowed me to spend time with my family when I need to help in the ‘it’s due tomorrow’ science project or attend a school function.” – Jamie L.

CarGurus

CarGurus transitioned the traditional in-person shopping experience to an online platform, allowing for seamless adaptation to remote work. The car marketplace already had flexible leave policies, and now, with many employees working from home, it extended remote healthcare services and wellness programs to its approximately 750 workers.

In addition to healthcare, CarGurus hosts online webinars and ensures events are scheduled during business hours, respecting employees’ home life. Their HR department and parent-focused employee resource group engage regularly to discover new ways to support working parents, using polls and focus groups to tailor assistance.

Cerner

Cerner, a healthcare IT and software provider, quickly transitioned to remote work and now contemplates a future without returning to pre-pandemic norms. The firm offers family support programs, including childcare coordination for sick kids or virtual education needs.

Access to telehealth services through HealthTap allows employees to consult with doctors virtually, while on-site medical care is available at their campuses. Cerner also adapted its fitness offerings to online classes for both adults and children, fostering engagement and maintaining wellness without compromising safety.

“After the start of virtual work, the maternity group quickly became a community for discussing parenting stresses during a pandemic.” – Lisa M.

Citigroup

As one of the largest banks in the U.S., Citigroup has made significant strides in enhancing its remote work environment. They began reimbursing employees for home office supplies, enabling them to create effective workspaces at home.

Citi also hosts global and region-specific virtual workshops and offers tutoring discounts for employees’ children. They facilitate learning pods for families wishing to maintain educational standards while schooling at home. Recently, the CEO announced initiatives to combat burnout, including banning internal video meetings on Fridays and designating a new company holiday, “Citi Reset Day,” to encourage time off.

Deloitte

As a leading professional services network, Deloitte prioritizes flexible and supportive policies for remote workers, especially parents. They offer generous parental leave benefits and have introduced additional paid time off for personal reasons.

Deloitte provides substantial financial resources for employees, including disaster relief payments for home office setups and dependent care payments for those needing extra help. Their “Community of Parents” website serves as a hub for resources and shared experiences among working parents.

Diageo

Diageo, the multinational beverage company, has adapted swiftly to remote work, ensuring employees are not pressured to be visible during video calls. They schedule networking events during working hours, supporting work-life balance.

The company launched virtual events for employees and their families, offering sessions like cooking classes and game nights, fostering connections and engagement.

eBay

Having thrived during the pandemic, eBay continues to support a remote workforce with flexible policies and resources tailored for parents.
