Sometimes I wonder if Americans realize that in many other countries, people aren’t being shot in grocery stores, movie theaters, places of worship, and schools on a daily basis. When mass shootings do occur elsewhere, they make headlines—not just a fleeting mention sandwiched between celebrity gossip and political tweets.
Is the average American aware that this violence is abnormal and should not be met with a resigned, “That’s just how it is in America!” when we hear about shootings claiming the lives of 3, 5, 10, or even more people each day? Yet, this has become the norm in our culture. “Only four people died this time? At least it wasn’t 20,” or “It was a shooting involving adults? Thank goodness it wasn’t another school shooting.”
What is Happening in America?
Adding to the frustration, many elected officials—especially those aligned with the Republican party—seem to avoid addressing the gun violence epidemic entirely. Instead of confronting the shocking statistics, such as the fact that the U.S. has a gun-related homicide rate that is 99 times higher than the U.K. and nearly 200 times that of Japan, they pivot to discuss any topic that allows them to evade the issue.
For example, they might criticize figures like Nancy Pelosi, rail against “socialism” (a term many Americans don’t fully grasp), or even discuss climate change—because who cares about the planet, right? The latest distraction seems to be targeting transgender individuals, particularly trans children.
In states like Florida, where the Parkland school shooting tragically claimed 17 lives, lawmakers are more concerned with preventing trans kids from playing sports than passing measures that might keep firearms out of the hands of troubled individuals. Apparently, the presence of a trans girl on a girls’ soccer team is perceived as a greater threat than a mass shooter in a school cafeteria.
Texas is another state where discussions about trans participation in sports overshadow the urgent issue of gun violence. It’s a state that has witnessed its share of shootings, including a recent manhunt for an active shooter who killed multiple people. Yet, the focus remains on limiting the rights of trans youth rather than addressing the pervasive gun culture.
Take Mississippi, for example, which has the weakest gun laws and the highest gun death rate in the country. Instead of enacting sensible gun legislation that has been shown to reduce gun violence, lawmakers are busy pushing the “Mississippi Fairness Act,” which restricts transgender students from competing in sports. It seems that protecting kids from gun violence takes a backseat to ensuring trans youth face further discrimination and isolation.
The reality is that these proposed laws lack any credible scientific backing and are driven purely by fear and prejudice. Experts like Dr. Eric Vilain, a pediatrician and geneticist, argue that there are no valid reasons to restrict trans women from participating in sports, especially at the high school level. These laws not only exclude trans kids but can also lead to harmful situations that leave lasting trauma.
The painful truth is that Republican lawmakers are using transphobia as a smokescreen to avoid confronting the real issues, allowing them to channel their discrimination into laws. As state Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando) noted, these efforts are causing immense harm to trans youth who deserve compassion and support, particularly in such challenging times.
Ultimately, the focus on attacking the rights of trans individuals instead of addressing gun violence reflects a troubling trend in a party that claims to uphold family values. It’s disheartening to think that some of these lawmakers may have trans children of their own, witnessing their parents’ actions that marginalize and endanger them.
But at least this keeps the conversation away from gun control, right?
