I chose to get vaccinated not just for my own sake and for everyone I interact with but also for him. That little bundle of joy is now receiving antibodies through my breastmilk. Research indicates that antibodies from the Covid vaccine are transferred through breastmilk, which is incredibly encouraging!
What About My Older Kids?
But what about my two older kids? At five and three years old, they are too young to be vaccinated. We hope they will become eligible soon, but until then, they remain vulnerable. Given the ongoing nature of this pandemic (my first experience with such an event), I decided to take some unconventional steps. My brilliant sister-in-law suggested that if I had extra breastmilk, I should share some with them. This idea was a game-changer! I quickly poured an ounce of my breastmilk into each of their cups. While it’s not a lot, I believe it’s better than nothing.
I’m grateful that I can continue breastfeeding my baby boy while also providing extra milk for my older children. Instead of weaning him, I’m nursing him as usual and pumping when possible to ensure all three kids get some breastmilk. Now, every morning, I sneak a little bit of breastmilk into their milk cups without them even noticing. I wonder if they would even care? But if there’s any chance of giving them added protection against this virus that has disrupted their lives, I’m all in.
A Shift in Perspective
It’s fascinating how quickly your perspective and parenting decisions can shift. If you had asked me a year and a month ago if I’d ever consider giving my older children breastmilk, I would have laughed. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
